Yttrium stabilized zirconium oxide

Zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) with yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃) as a stabilizer
Yttrium stabilized zirconium oxide - also known as Y-TZP - is a technical ceramic material with exceptional mechanical strength and temperature resistance. By doping zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) with yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃), the tetragonal crystal structure is stabilized - an effect that gives the material high fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance.
Precision in structure and performance:
Y-TZP is used wherever materials have to function reliably under extreme conditions. The material shows its strengths in medical technology (e.g. dentures, implants), aerospace, automotive engineering, sensor technology and electronics. Zirconium oxide is also used in stabilized form in fuel cells, measuring probes and grinding tools - especially when maximum hardness, chemical inertness and thermal shock resistance are required.
Application areas at a glance:
- Technical ceramics (oxide ceramics)
- Dental applications (crowns, bridges)
- Plasma spray coatings
- Sensors and measurement technology
- Automotive industry (e.g. lambda sensors)
- Electrical and energy technology (e.g. SOFC cells)
Special features:
- Low thermal conductivity
- Stabilization of the tetragonal phase by yttrium oxide
- Corrosion and oxidation resistant
- Biocompatible, non-toxic

Frequently asked questions about yttrium stabilized zirconium oxide
How does Y-TZP differ from conventional zirconium oxide?
Y-TZP is zirconium oxide stabilized by yttrium, which maintains a tetragonal phase – making it significantly more fracture-resistant and stronger than unstabilized variants.
Is Y-TZP suitable for medical applications?
Yes. Due to its biocompatibility and high strength, it is used in dentistry and implants. It meets the requirements for medical ceramics.
Can PROJECTOR also supply special grain sizes or pellets?
We supply both powdered Y-TZP and pre-sintered forms. Grain sizes and specifications can be customized.
Is Y-TZP supplied worldwide?
Depending on your requirements, we offer a wide range of packaging units of Y-TZP or zirconium oxide. Discuss your requirements directly with our customer advisors. Our logistics are tailored to technical raw materials.
