Zirconium oxide

Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) in industrial quality
Zirconium oxide - also known chemically as zirconium dioxide or ZrO₂ - is a ceramic powder with high thermal and chemical stability. It is one of the most frequently used raw materials in technical ceramics. PROJECTOR supplies zirconium oxide in industrial quality for use in processes with high temperature loads, aggressive media or mechanical stress.
Areas of application for zirconium oxide:
Zirconium oxide is used in numerous industries - for example in ceramic production, medical technology, sensor technology and fuel cell technology. Due to its thermal shock resistance and electrical insulation properties, the material is also suitable for applications in electronics and process technology. A typical application is the production of high-performance ceramics for machine components, seals, knives or dental blanks.
Typical use:
- Structural ceramics (e.g. pistons, valve seats, bearings)
- Dental raw materials (e.g. for crowns, bridges, blocks)
- Oxide ceramic coatings and sintered components
- Sensors & measurement technology (e.g. lambda sensors, ionic conductors)
- High-temperature applications & melting technologies
Material properties:
Zirconium oxide is a white to gray-white powder that is available in various purities and grain sizes. It is characterized by very low thermal conductivity, high hardness and chemical resistance to acids and alkalis. For special applications, zirconium oxide can be stabilized with yttrium (Y-TZP), which creates additional fracture toughness.
Material advantages at a glance:
- Melting point above 2,700 °C
- High strength & abrasion resistance
- Suitable for oxidizing & reducing atmospheres
- Also available in stabilized form (e.g. with yttrium)
Technical specifications:
- Chemical formula: ZrO₂
- Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS-NR.): 1314-23-4
- EC Index Number (EC No.): 215-227-2
